As promised, Telekom Malaysia (TM) launched UniFi today, their high speed broadband service with connection speeds of up to 20Mbps! (Read details here). I must admit that I’m impressed that they met their targeted launch date – when I last blogged about it back in October 2009, I wasn’t quite sure whether they would meet it.

At the time of my writing, I was unable to obtain pricing details on the TM website but they will be having a media briefing tomorrow – so I expect full details should be available then.

So, I was glad to read that they had indeed launched it today. Sadly, only selected areas – Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar – will get to sign up to enjoy the faster connection immediately. Fortunately, a further 22 areas are slated to be added by June with a further 22 areas be added by December 2010.

My fingers are now crossed to be eligible for the first 22 areas – since I’ve have seen trucks (with HSBB signs) working around my area ;)  Waiting till June is a pain but still bearable, December is definitely out of the question.

Last week was a pretty hectic time for me – we had submitted for approval an app version update for Fruit Alphabets as well as a new lite version of Animal Alphabets.

Apple’s approval times have become quite impressive. The version update i.e. the inclusion of fun facts for Fruit Alphabets was approved within 2 days! Check out the latest version of Fruit Alphabets here.

We are also launching the a new lite version of Animal Alphabets on the App Store soon – 23 March 2010. The fun facts feature is not available on the lite version and it is supported by ads – meaning its free for download at no cost.

Animal Alphabets Lite is our first foray into the ad-supported business model. We had blogged about it earlier (see here) decided to include a lite version of Animal Alphabets for free download after considerable thought – hopefully, it will work out as planned.

Free Versus Fee Business Model

As most of you may know, we are currently deep in the development of our next iPhone application. In the course of the development process, the million dollar question of which business model to adopt in the sale of the app naturally came up.

This has since developed into a serious topic of discussion and we are now considering a change in our business model – from the existing paid download model to a (riskier, some might say) ad-driven, free app model.

So, we checked out the various mobile ad networks that are available and came across AdWhirl (www.adwhirl.com). Now, AdWhirls is not actually a mobile ad provider – instead, it is sort of an ads provider “aggregator” that allows you to serve ads from any ad network – the range of networks include AdMob, JumpTap, Millennial, Quattro Wireless, and VideoEgg. If we do go ahead with the free app model, AdWhirl is quite likely the platform that we will be implementing.

Incidentally, Google announced (see blog article here) in November 2009 that it was acquiring AdMob (which owns AdWhirl) whilst Ad Mob competitor, Quattro Wireless, is being bought by Apple (see article).

Surely, these acquisitions by Google and Apple, who are now competing head to head with their smartphone offerings  - Nexus One and iPhone is an indication of the shape of things to come.

I haven’t been posting much the last 2 weeks – have been very busy working on the latest iPhone app! But I couldn’t resist after seeing this teaser below on the DiGi website.

Apparently, the iPhone 3GS will be coming to DiGi soon. Not only am I expecting more iPhone users in Malaysia but also future prices of the iPhone to get more competitive, given DiGi’s history for providing its customers with good deals – sweet!
