Android Overtakes iPhone OS

Its been slightly over a month since I last posted. Our next app offering will be launched soon so I’ve been understandably busy with the development, sales, marketing etc.

Amidst my demanding schedule, I had read (see article here) that Android had overtaken the iPhone OS as the second most popular OS. Reuters carried an article on 11 May that said Google’s Android operating software now had a 28% share of the sales of smartphone unit in the US (versus Blackberry’s 36% and the iPhone’s 21%).

Whilst I had expected it to be only a matter of time before this happened, I must admit that the speed at which it occurred surprised me. I am sure it will only be a matter of time before the rest of the world catches up in the adoption of the iPhone OS.  On the same day, Maxis announced that it was now offering several smartphones that run on the Android OS.

If I had any doubts about the inclusion of the Android OS in our future app development plans, this was conclusively erased after reading the article…..

Latest iPhone Updates

I’m actually out of town until next week but couldn’t resist posting on the latest news (hot in the heels of the iPad launch) coming out from Apple yesterday at its Cupertino, California campus.

Apart from multi-tasking and an update of the usual statistics (e.g. 185,000 apps on the App Store, 3.5 billion apps downloaded etc.), some of the more interesting developments I liked includes an iAd application that allows users to access in-app ads without leaving the app and users can now buy an app for another user as a gift.

You can read this article for a blow by blow account of Steve Jobs’ presentation yesterday.

iPad: Apple’s New Tablet PC

I’ve just been reading all the news I could find on yesterday’s launch of Apple’s latest product line – the iPad, a tablet-based computer. Check out some of the initial reviews here – reviews by: Gizmodo, Engadget, NYTimes – For and NYTimes – Against.

Or if you have a decent broadband connection (unlike me) and prefer video, you can watch the broadcast of Steve Jobs presenting the iPad here.

My first impressions of the device’s form (without the benefit of physically) is that the bezel border must go. It simply ruins the clean lines that a tablet computer, IMO, should offer. Apart from the name, I particularly dislike the add-on keyboard – fortunately, it supports bluetooth connections.

Here’s a quick run-down on the iPad: -

  • Runs on a proprietary Apple microprocessor
  • Holds 16-64GB of data
  • Battery lasts up to 10 hours
  • 0.5 inches thick
  • Measures 9.56 x 7.47 inches
  • Weight is 1.5 pounds without 3G (1.6 pounds)
  • iBooks: built-in ebook reader

The iPad goes on sale in two months – no exact date given by Apple. Prices range from $499 for a 16GB version with WiFi only to $829 for a 64GB top of the range version with WiFi, 3G wireless modem and includes A-GPS. At these prices, I definitely see myself owning one – when it eventually reaches Malaysian shores, that is.
